Essential Oils Compared to Perfumery Absolutes

In this blog we will be exploring the similarities and differences between essential oils and perfumers absolutes!

Let's begin with essential oils! Essential oils are the concentrated oils derived from plant material by methods like steam distillation and cold pressing. They contain the essence of the plant's fragrance and chemical compounds and are often associated with Aromatherapy, which utilizes the various healing effects associated with different aromatic compounds.

In addition to Aromatherapy, the therapeutic benefits of essential oils are commonly used in natural perfumery, skincare, massage, well being and DIY projects. Essential oils offer a gentler aroma and generally have a lighter consistency that is more appropriate for use in diffusers, nebulizers, steam showers and spa saunas.

Perfumery absolutes are similar to essential  oils in that they are also produced from plant materials, however different extraction techniques are used like solvent extraction. The resulting absolute oil has a stronger and more intricate scent profile compared to essential oils. They have a thicker consistency that is sometimes even solid and often exhibit a deeper amber like color.

Due to their extremely concentrated and intense fragrance, absolute oils are prized by perfumers in the formulas of perfumes and colognes. Absolutes have a variety of applications because of their ability to provide a strong natural quality scent and can be useful to scent lotions, candles, soaps, cosmetics and other personal care products.

In summary, while essential oils are very versatile offering beautiful aromas and an array of healing effects, absolutes are vital to the fragrance industry and favored by perfumers. Its important to remember that each have their own unique properties and applications!
